New Friends

As I have mentioned before, making new friends is one of my favorite parts of racing and training. I have met some amazing ladies over the past few weeks and wanted to introduce them to you: Heather, Sarah, Carlee at Salem Pond Heather Bracken (left) is my swim buddy at Masters. Unfortunately, the only time we can talk in the pool is while kicking. And that is definitely not enough. So we went snowshoeing together and signed up for the same race - the Salem Spring Triathlon. Here we are before checking out Salem Pond. Carlee Tule t t (right) is one awesome neighbor. I love to hang out with her and we have had quite some fun together at various races, training, the park, bike shopping, and playing with our kids. She is going to do the Salem Triathlon as well which means it is going to be one big party ! Melissa and I in our twin outfits I met Melissa Pa y n e at the SG Tri and knew right away that I wanted to be friends with her. She is super fun , friendly , and fast . She als

Brick Training Tips

I am writing a few little articles for the TriUtah blog and thought I would post them here as well. Sarah Jarvis - Cache Valley Classic Tri Training Tips #1 One of the best things you can do in order to prepare yourself well for a triathlon is to incorporate transition runs and bricks into your training. They are both combination workouts that include a bike and a run back to back. A transition run is a short (not more than 10 minutes) run off the bike, whereas a brick usually involves a little longer run. Even for a strong runner, coming off the bike and starting to run can be difficult because the legs feel “weird” and heavy. In order to train my legs to switch as fast and as efficiently as possible between the two sports, I try to run off the bike as often as possible. After (almost) every ride, I put on my running shoes and head out for a hard 10 minute run. If I am short on time (which I usually am), I will cut my bike ride a few minutes short and still squeeze in a run. If

Kida Relay

Last weekend it was finally time for the Kida relay. I had been looking forward to to this race for a while and was very excited to be on a team with three triathlon studs : Leslie Howlett, Jameson King, and Ian Nelson. We were hoping to be able to win the co-ed division but secretly (or not so secretly, actually), the boys were wishing to beat the male teams, as well. this race had me smiling all day (but not all night) This is how the relay works: 8am-8pm: we take turns biking a 25-mile loop 8pm-8am: we take turns running a 6-mile loop The teams get points for each loop. The faster , the more points. Makes sense? Jameson started out and pulled all the other teams around West Mountain. Then it was Ian's turn. Here he is handing me the "baton", which is really a slap stick. I ride around the mountain . Come back. Leslie's turn We were able to do 10 loops in 12 hours. Not bad. No teams managed to get more. Props to Ian and Jameson who did 3 laps each. They were amazi

St. George Triathlon

Swim 750 meters, Bike 12.4 miles, Run 3.1 miles Pre-race: My sister , Emily, and my niece , Lynn, flew in from Germany Wednesday night. Friday morning we dropped the boys off at my in-laws and headed down south for the SG Tri and some quality girls' time. Packet pick-up was great fun as usual. Since this was the first triathlon of the season I got to catch up with friends I had not seen in a while and meet new ones. Definitely my favorite part of racing. Then it was time to hit Cafe Rio , head over to the hotel, take a dip in the pool, and make some last minute preparations. Definitely much more relaxing than camping. Last year I took the whole family, we camped by the lake, got (literally) blown away in a storm, and our night ended at 3:30 am. I, the camper girl, must admit that I don't mind hotels pre-race. Race morning: We both knew that this race would pretty much be between Caprice and me . No other girls had signed up for Elite and we did not recognize any of the oth

PowerTri

I really enjoyed racing for the SLRC over the last few years and they have been incredibly nice to me, but it was time for a change . I am super excited to announce that I will now be racing for Power Tri PowerTri is a triathlon store in Lehi where you can get everything you could possibly need for your triathlon racing and training. We still all do our own thing, but it is nice to know that you are not alone out there. 4 of us are racing together this weekend in the Kida Relay . I am really looking forward to it. 24 hours of biking, running, eating, chatting, hanging out, and smashing yourself. Sounds like my kind of fun. Good luck to all my friends racing in the Woman of Steel Triathlon and the Timpanogos Trail Marathon. Have fun and enjoy the pain!

5 in 5

Just a few weeks ago I was wondering how much I would be able to race this season. I had not signed up for any races yet. My racing calendar was empty . Well, things have changed. Quite drastically. I am now signed up for 5 races in the next 5 weeks . I am not sure how I got into this much trouble this fast. But I am determined to make the best of it and enjoy each race to the fullest. Here is what I am going to be up to the next few weekends: 5/15 St. George Triathlon sprint distance 5/22 Kida Relay 24 hour bike/run relay 5/29 Daybreak Triathlon olympic distance 6/5 Salem Spring Triathlon sprint distance 6/12 Cache Valley Triathlon olympic distance I am really excited for all of them! Ironman St. George Weekend

No way was I going to miss the Ironman coming to Utah! Just in case there is still any confusion: I was not racing. Never planned on it. Never had a desire to do so. Almost. Why? I like to have a life besides triathlon. I've been there, done that. Too early in the season. No desire to train hard through the winter. But I was still dying to go down there, be part of the excitement , support my friends, and have a blast! So when my friend, Lynda Wallenfels, invited my family to stay at her house, we packed up the car and headed south. Part of me wanted to go down there by myself, so I could spend all of race day out there being the kind of cheerleader I like to be. The other part of me was excited to go on a fun family adventure and squeeze all of my favorite activities into one short weekend: Early morning trail run, beautiful bike rides, lots of family fun, cheering here and there, good food. What more could I ask for? Congratulations to all of my friends who finished such a tou
