Training Truths

Squaw Peak - 3 Witches Ride July '10 I claim that I use my blog as a journal . Who writes in their journal nothing but the good? I would like my blogs to (somehow) reflect reality and let you (and myself) know what is really going on. I wrote a post ( here ) about a few things that have been difficult for us as a family since our move to Flagstaff. Personally, I am not a fan of change. At all. I like routine and consistency . Especially in training and in raising my boys. I know change is good and so I try to embrace it. Sometimes it is easy, sometimes hard. The Good News My coaches , Heath and Mahogani, are still providing me with excellent (off-season) workouts. PowerTri continues to sponsor me! Thank you so much! I hope to represent you well down here in Arizona. I get to be on the Rocky Mountain Running & Triathlon Advisory Board for 2011. I am so excited to work with them! Being able to represent this sport means a lot to me. They wanted me although I don't even

StrollerStrides

Usually, while Noah is having a great time at preschool, Max and I go running . When Noah was little, I took him on runs in the stroller all the time. Before moving to Flagstaff, Max had hardly ever had that pleasure for different reasons: a) who wants to push a double jogger with 2 kids in it while running? Right now my kids weigh 29 and 41 lbs. The chariot itself is at least 30 lbs. 100 extra lbs? No thanks. Unless that is my only option... b) I hate sitting around doing nothing. I assume my kids do, too. So I try to spare them. c) I was (usually) always free to run by myself in Provo. Good friends, grandparents, neighbors, cousins. Most of the time, I had someone to play with my kids. Well, things change . Now I am " stuck " here in Flagstaff. All by my little self. So with Noah in preschool 3 mornings a week, it was time to get out the single Chariot. I've always loved our Cougar CX. I can't seem to find any pictures of ours, unfortunately. It is pretty much

Speedgoat 50k

Guest post by Karl Race Report Speedgoat 50k I had some unfinished, no, unstarted business to take care of at the Speedgoat this year. From the first time I heard about it I knew it was for me . I mean, why wouldn't I run a race with about as much climbing as the Squaw Peak 50, all packed into a 50k? It's not like Karl Meltzer would design a race that's not crazy cool . 2008 : At the Wahsatch Steeplechase, I meet Karl Meltzer, and I explain I don't want to commit to it because my wife, Sarah, was expecting the same weekend. Even though he didn't really know me, he guarantees me entry into it if it works out with the baby. The timing doesn't work out, and I don't do it. 2009 : I focus on 50k distance, train a ton, and then get myself a stress fracture a few weeks before the Speedgoat. Meltzer rolls my registration over to next year instead of taking my entry fee and leaving me out in the cold. Another reason he's a stud. 2010 : I'm better trained

BAM - My Race Report

Sorry. This is the only picture I have. I was able to stand on the podium in 1st place again! But this race was a little different from all the others this season. I did not lead the race from start to finish. And actually, believe it or not, that is just what I had hoped for. I told Karl before the race that I was really hoping for some tough competition. If that meant I was not going to win, so be it! I was ready to be pushed hard and give it my very best. Thanks to the great preparation of my coaches, Heath and Mahogani , I was feeling better and stronger than I had all season. It sure makes me work harder if I am accountable to someone else. I had also gone up and checked out the course with Heath and my teammate, Missy. It was great to have Heath talk us through the bike course and give us pointers about where to push it and where to give the legs a little break. Well, I got what I'd asked for. At least for the swim and bike. Right from the start there were two girls

BAM Race Festival - Karl's Duathlon

The stunningly beautiful run course and finish chute I am a lame race reporter, I have to admit. It has been 5 weeks since BAM and I am finally making myself write a little report. I could come up with lots of excuses , but I won't. So here is what I remember: As usual, my short-term camping-with-kids-before-a-race memory was not functioning very well and I thought it would be a great idea to squeeze as much fun for the whole family as possible into less than 24 hours. This included a duathlon for Karl, a triathlon for me, lots of running around in the dirt and grass for the kids, and camping for all of us! Oh, and lunch with dear friends. I can already tell that I am remembering way more than is good for me to write down or for you to read, so I am going to try to keep it (somewhat) short and simple. Have I already mentioned how much I hate getting ready for a camping trip (even if it is just one night or maybe especially if it is just one night) AND a race at the same time

Wonder Woman Ride

If I were in Utah on September 18th , this is what I would be doing: It is a beautiful ride in and around Payson created by women for women. If you don't feel up for 100 miles, you can do 30 or 70. Here is why it is going to be awesome and why you will love it: there are going to be a lot of fun, amazing ladies to mingle with my coach, Mahogani, is one of the best race organizers great swag September is pretty much the best month for biking finish line with great food, music, and surprises a mascot in costume super cute finisher's necklace these really darling earrings I really should not even have started this post. Now I am even more sad I won't be there. Believe me, you don't want to miss out on this party ! These women will have thought of everything to spoil you! As I am writing this post I chatted with one of the volunteers, Marci Simons, and she let me in on some fun secrets regarding the event. So, (if you are a woman) do me a favor and sign up , will

I Got Mail Today

This is what I found in my little package: The AVIA BOLT I love them! Can't wait to take them out. Thank you, BBSC Tri and Team Fastlane ! PS: There are so many blog posts waiting to be written. I am so far behind, it is almost pathetic. Please be patient. I am still busy exploring the seemingly endless opportunities to have fun in Flagstaff.
