Dove Valley - Best Kept Secret

Now that's what I call a nice road for cycling!  How come no one ever told me about Dove Valley Road and the adjoining Apache Trailhead when I asked people where I should ride my bike in the Phoenix area?!? I had to go find that little road all by myself one day while exploring the area during my son's soccer game at Reach 11. It's a gem! Right off the freeway, smooth and wide with a bike lane and great scenery!  Granted, it's not very long but, hey, I am a hamster and have no problem riding in circles for a couple of hours or even longer! It's perfect for a (double) brick and you can choose whether you want to run on the road or on the fun trails right next to it. What more could you possibly want? Oh yeah. A pool or lake. Well, I am working on that...  Writing this makes me want to go there RIGHT NOW. And I am sure I will on my next trip down there or through Phoenix. This place makes me happy !    My kind of trail: smoot...

Race Report: DESERT CLASSIC DUATHLON 2015

Making new friends - the best part of racing!  This is a super fun race I love to come to! Since I am really no good at mountain biking (I used to be decent and want to get back into it!) but love trail running, this is the perfect fit ! We get to run TWICE on the fun trails in McDowell Mountain Regional Park and bike on some nice roads around the park. And, of course, it's always a treat to escape winter in Flagstaff and enjoy some warm sun down here!  This is going to be a bit of a different race report.  Coach Liz   (my first race under her) had me answer some questions after the race and I am going to post those and my answers here. This race actually attracts quite a good field of speedy women!  Did you reach your goals for this race? Yes, I did. My main goal was to go hard and leave nothing out on the course. The second run could’ve possibly been harder but given the circumstances, I would say I did the best I could. I only h...

2015 Season Prep

Love me some skate skiing at Soldier Hollow!  Here is a bit of what I have been up to in preparation for the 2015 triathlon season that seems to be just around the corner! And I couldn't be more excited!!! Provo Rec Masters  One of my favorite things about visiting Provo is the masters swim class at the new Provo Rec Center! Coach Heath is the bomb and it's surely never boring with him on deck! Swimming is so much more fun with a group of friends and, while I miss Northern Arizona Masters, I am glad to have these goofballs with me while logging the miles in the pool over Christmas break!  Never a dull moment with this group!  And just in time for some new motivation to get to the pool during the cold and dark winter months, Coeur sent me a lovely new swim suit that perfectly matches my T3 Triathlon  swim cap! Score! Thank you!  looking good = feeling good New Bike  I couldn't be more excited about this sp...

Operation Baby Baby

As far as the title goes:  No. This is NOT what my Mormon friends might be thinking. I am NOT pregnant.* This is a good thing but, dang, those newborns are just so precious!  We've had a few Operation XX lately. It all started with my 6-year-old coming home from school a few weeks ago telling me about Operation Smoochie Smoochie . Yep, it's what you think it is. He is trying to kiss a girl! Or they are trying to kiss each other.   Or a bunch of boys are trying to kiss her.  Who knows?!? I am trying not to bug him about it every five minutes although I am dying to find out all of the details! I happen to think that Cooper is the coolest girl ever but he assures me that there are very strict rules against kissing at his school. What a bummer! Karl and I just shake our heads because - where does this kid even come from? We can each count the lovers we've kissed in our ENTIRE LIVES one ONE hand. And Noah couldn't care any less about girls. But ...

A little adventure in a GRAND CANYON

Sunset at the Canyon With Ironman behind us and Thanksgiving break upon us, it was time to do some more exploring of the Grand Canyon!!! The GC is basically in our backyard, only a short 75-minute drive away from our home in Flagstaff. My last GC adventure consisted of a 180-mile bike loop from my house to the South Rim, along the rim, and back home. That day was super fun but now it was time to spend a few quality days as a family and to get down into the canyon.  (Rim-to-river-and-back report is further down if you want to skip the family part...) Love this place! I mean: Who doesn't want to run to the bottom of all of this awesomeness ?  Especially when there's water down there?  (A lake? A river? A waterfall? A puddle? Count me in!)  But first my shopping buddy, Max, and I had some grocery shopping to do while Noah opted to stay home alone and read. So we bought lots of healthy Thanksgiving food and a big can of whipped cream ...
