I ran with an Olympic Hopeful today!

Since today was a recovery day, I decided to try something new. The only thing on the plan was Masters (swim) in the morning. Days like that make me nervous. It means that by 4 pm I am grumpy and feel fat. It did not help that today was beautiful. Sunny and in the 60s. YMCA to the rescue. Max is definitely used to it by now. Noah strongly dislikes it but I've decided to drag him there once a week anyway. This month the weekly schedule has a new group workout: Running Club . Thursdays. 4 pm. Perfect! I had asked about it before but still was not sure what it was going to be like. All I knew was that you can drop your kids off and then go run outside with other people. Bingo! Just what I needed today. I am definitely growing a little tired of doing 99% of the training by myself. Once there I found out that a runner from Team McMillan Elite is going to lead the workout. Now that is pretty exciting! When do you get to work out with a professional runner that will slow down for you?

Spring Break

Old photo I found on this old computer. Well, I won't brag about a good workout on this blog again for a while. For a whole week after that run my training basically sucked. Sad but true. Saturday my plan called for 50/5 . Meaning 50 miles on the bike followed by a 5-mile run. I love bricks! They are my favorite! I usually feel better running off the bike than just running. Let's just say this one did not go as planned. I managed to have a HR average of 125 bpm although I (thought I) was doing intervals. Pathetic! I guess holding onto your handlebars for dear life and breaking on the downhills for fear of getting blown over does not give you a good workout. It still wears you out though. I tried so hard to run fast off the bike and I just did not have it in me. I was so done when I got home! People warned me that spring in Flagstaff was going to be windy . "Well, how windy can it get?" I thought. Now I know. Extremely windy. Every day. I am so tired of it already and

Today's Training and Nutrition

Sally M. winning the AZ marathon this year I know. I know. I should really be writing a post about my awesome training camp in St. George, but I am just not feeling it. I was not going to write anything today since I have been engrossed in Sally Meyerhoff 's blog. It is so incredibly sad what happened to her. I don't want to go into details since I am sure some of you have already read her story. She is a professional runner and was also planning on racing triathlons professionally this year. She has had tremendous success both as a runner and as a triathlete. I don't know her personally but I have loved getting to know her a bit more through her blog. Sally lived and trained just a couple of hours south of Flagstaff and was loving life and sports. She was hoping to qualify for the Olympics and had an unbelievably positive outlook on everything. She was out on a training ride on Tuesday, got hit by a truck in an intersection, and died immediately. I am at a loss for words

The Aftermath

Yesterday's run - Long Canyon in Sedona (For some reason my last post Before the sickness hit did not show up in Google Reader or people's blogs. Just FYI.) So. We are talking about the aftermath of the St. George Halfmarathon here. I just feel like I have not quite concluded that story and some of you might still want to know what happened to the planned bike ride. Well, it went something like this: I am still shivering in the car while Jen goes to check if the condo is open. While she is gone, I happen to find a big bag of Peanut M&Ms . Perfect post-race recovery snack , right? Protein? Check. Carbs? Check. Fat? Check. Great! I snarf down a handful and (un)fortunately don't feel like eating more. Something must be seriously wrong with me. On a normal day I could eat the whole bag and feel just fine. I am considering the hot tub but the thought of having to walk to and from the hot tub is unbearable. A long hot shower it is. Then warm clothing, compression socks,

Before the sickness hit...

HT Training group at Washington Community Center (I am the dork that did not take off her goggles) Finally. I get to tell you a little bit more about my St. George weekend in January . I will stick to the high-/lowlights. First time driving from Flagstaff, AZ to St. George, UT. Definitely not as bad as I thought it would be. 5 hours. I can handle 5 hours. Especially when I don't have kids to entertain in the back seat. The route is very scenic and I get excited that I get to live in this beautiful part of the country. But, as usual, a long drive the afternoon before a race messes up my nutrition . I tried to be careful with snacks but I don't think I drank enough. I got into town around 5 pm and went to packet pick-up . Considering that it was a running race and not a triathlon, I ran into quite a few friends and enjoyed catching up with them. That's what races are (almost) all about. Skipping dinner was probably a mistake but a) I just was not hungry because all I had do

Top 20

As I was trying to finally update my blog and figuring out where to start, I got an email from USAT . It reads: Congratulations ! As a finisher in the Top 20 of your age group in the 2010 USA Triathlon final Rankings, I want to take this opportunity to congratulate you for a terrific 2010 triathlon season! As you may or may not know, this Top 20 finishing place has earned you a right to potentially be on Team USA and compete in the 2011 ITU Olympic distance Triathlon World Championships in Beijing, China. I actually received 2 emails. The second one says the pretty much the same thing. Just swap Olympic for Sprint . So. Here are my thoughts : Pretty cool. Top 20 . Not bad. Do I care exactly where in the top 20 I am? Not really. I won't research it. Karl can if he wants to. Does that mean I am also All American? One year I was and they sent me some certificate in the mail. Big deal. Is that what I am paying for? I hope not. I have issues with USAT, to say the least. That remind
