The Other Half

Just wanted to make sure you I give HT enough credit here. I know I talk about Coach M a lot but this guy deserves just as much credit as his wife. I don't think I have given you the link to his website, so here it is. He might not be the best writer but he is pretty much the best swimmer in this sport. It has not been the best season for him so far but I am certain his break-through race is very close! I love the Thurston Family! WonderWoman Marci and HT at last year's event Coach M also happens to be an amazing race organizer and it is almost time for her Wonder Woman Ride ! You can choose if you want to enjoy the beauty of the course for 100 miles, 62 miles, or 30 miles. September 17th, 2011. It is going to be fantastic! If I did not race in Vegas the week before AND live so far away, I would be there in a heartbeat . I still have a tiny bit of hope! Go here to find out more. Go here to register. Go here to read my post about last year's event. You really don't

Post Injury SmashWeek

Me, Coach M, Missy Payne Did I really tell Coach M at the end of last week that: "I am ready. Bring it on. Hit me hard!" What was I thinking? I know that Coach listens to her athletes and she did, indeed, bring it on! It is Thurday night. We just put the kids to bed and read scriptures. It went as follows: Karl calls me. I crawl into their room. Collapse on the floor. Try to stay awake and listen while wondering if I am ever going to be able to get back up. Although today was an easy day with only 4000m in the pool and 1 hour of core synergistics at the gym, I am still smashed . However, I have really enjoyed the training this week (so far) and am so happy that my leg has decided to get better quickly and join the party! My running buddy , Karen, just got back into town and we joined forces on Monday for a good-paced run. I knew it was easier to get the work done with a partner but I had forgotten how much easier! Thank you, Karen! I was already in love with Tuesday b

The Best Cheerleaders

Waiting for Mama... I wish I was racing this weekend but I am not. I think my kids are sad, too. They love going to races and cheer us on. They like racing as well but, unfortunately, there are not enough (affordable) kids' races around. Look at how much fun they had at the Salem Spring Triathlon . It has the most kid-friendly venue and having Rubie and Eric around makes everything even better! Coming up with their own race Eric and Noah waiting for Jen and I to cross the finish line. Luckily, they did not have to wait long... I love giving them high-fives on my way. It's the least I can do. It looks like they will all be around cheering when I am trying to race my guts out in Vegas in only 8 (!!!) weeks. Have I mentioned that I have the best parents-in-law? It was making me nervous having to take care of my boys the last days leading up to Vegas. I really want to be at the race Thursday and have time to soak it all in, get set up, check out the course, etc. However, it

A Bad Ending to a Great Week

Post double-brick on Thursday Monday: 4100m swim (4th of July Parade) 2:30 brick (4th of July Party) Tuesday: 4000m swim (swim lessons) (sports camp) 10 mile tempo run 1:00 stretching and foam rolling In order to redeem my self from last week's horrible run, we came up with a new plan . Coach M now has me do my warm-up on the bike . I love running off the bike. It also eliminates thoughts such as: "Crap! Why do I need to warm up at 8:00 pace? This is not an easy pace for me. I am screwed already. There is no way I can make these times." I came up with another great idea . How about I run the first 5 miles on the treadmill and the last 5 outside? Holding a fast pace is so much easier on the treadmill. But maybe if my legs are used to it they can do it outside as well! Well, the monsoon got a little in the way of this idea. After 1/4 of a mile in torrential downpour, I was swimming in my shoes and decided to go back to the gym. Of course, once I was back on the treadmill

When the wheels come off...

(some of) NAU Masters I know I have been racing pretty well lately. I also know that I have plenty of workouts where I don't even come close to nailing it. Some days I feel like crap the minute I leave the house and would rather go back home than keep running or biking. Monday was one of those days... I took the week after Boise pretty easy . Lots of fun workouts, very little structure. I absolutely love having a coach and a plan but I am also a big fan of just going out and doing whatever I feel like. The next week was still pretty low-key . Partly because Karl was out of town, partly because I was still enjoying a nice little mid-season break. Then I had a couple of good training days and was ready to get back at it. Or so I thought. Monday actually started out better than anticipated. I was excited to be back with the NAU Masters and we even had 2 famous visitors: Leanda Cave , triathlon world champion. Thorsten Abel , Leanda's husband and successful German pro triat
