Deuces Wild Triathlon Festival - Join the Party!

This is an invitation to all of my friends to join us on the first weekend in June in Show Low, Arizona, for the Deuces Wild Triathlon Festival ! There is a race for everyone: Deuceman Long Course Olympic Distance - I am registered for this one! XTERRA Deuces Wild - Karl is up for another triathlon. Yay! Youth Deuceathon - Max and Noah are already stoked about the kids race.  Plus, there is the option for relays ! Each race can be competed in as a 2- or 3-person relay. See? There really is no excuse why you can't come play with us in this beautiful part of Arizona! The Half and the Olympic are on Saturday morning, the Kids Duathlon is on Saturday afternoon, and Karl gets to race in the XTERA on Sunday morning. Perfect timing!  Yes. I realize that the race is put on by my sponsor  but that's not the only reason I want you to come! Karl and I already reserved a beautiful camping spot right by the lake and we would love nothing more than to have a whole ...

My Own Little 40k Swim Camp

Swimming outdoors. I want to go back to Tucson!  I love training camps . They have been my favorite ever since I was 16 and our team would go to Italy in April for 10 days to swim, bike, run, and have fun! I was in heaven even though the rest of my team consisted of men about twice my age. I have so many fond memories of those weeks and will share those soon because, guess what? I scanned a bunch of pictures of me as a teenager racing in the 90s in a  (very modest) bikini. They are too good (i.e. hilarious) not to share! Since I am not a carefree teenager anymore but a (somewhat) responsible mother and wife, I can't just take off whenever I feel like it these days. Huge bummer, I know. But I make do and decided that I can just have my very own training camps right here in my backyard. I announced to Coach that instead of swimming 30k during swim week like last year, I was going to do 40k. Oh wait. Ha! I just realized that I did NOT tell her that. I pretended ...

It doesn't take much...

It really doesn't take much to make me happy !  I have realized that I enjoy life the most when it's simple .  Like today. That's why one of my motto's for 2013 is:  Simplify!  Swimming with friends early in the morning is a great way to start the day. Even if I am out of shape because I took 2+ weeks completely off from swimming. But, turns out the extra body fat came in handy today because I got to hang out in the water after practice and hear some great stories from JL. My favorite part was when he admitted: I love traveling by myself. Other people tend to just get in the way! Glad to find out I am not the only one who feels that way at times...  Came home to happy kids and a very kind husband who agreed to let me leave for some skate skiing before I even had time to finish breakfast. Good times in the car with the Spinti family on our way to the Nordic Center. I got to ski by myself for 2 beautiful hours on great snow in the ...

The Barefoot North Face

(Disclaimer: This post has nothing to do with triathlon. Shocking, I know.) Last night Karl and I attempted to watch a movie . Afterwards we lied in bed and laughed at ourselves. It appears that we are virtually incapable of having a proper movie night. Last movie we watched together? Maybe one this summer at his parents' house? Not sure. And if we did then I was either on the computer half the time or stretching on the floor. Either way it's been a long time. This weekend we are house-sitting down here in Phoenix and have access to Netflix. 220 movies available to us. You'd think we could fine one we like and that's worth our time.Well, it only took me about 23 minutes to find one I was sort of interested in: Nordwand . (North Face.) It probably doesn't come as a surprise that it was a German movie. Good thing Karl speaks German... It was a good movie. I was a little hesitant at first because it plays during the time of Hitler. I have seen more than my ...

Winter Dates

Our wedding anniversary is in December.  This year we were lucky enough to treat ourselves to  3 (!) dates all in one month.  Wow.  While the kids were still in school  but Karl was done with classes,  we got enough snow in Flagstaff to go cross-country skiing!  So we dropped the kids off at (pre) school  and went out to the Nordic Center for some skate skiing .  We were a little bit hesitant since the car thermometer  read -2 degrees Fahrenheit.  Just because it sounds even worse:  That is -18 degrees Celsius.  I wasn't sure if I was going to survive .  Neither was Karl.  He was already planning his relaxing stay in the lodge  for at least the first hour.  But by the time we got there  the sun was out warming things up a bit and my friend, Jennifer, was ready to roll.  So off we went - all 3 of us.  Because who says you can...

Be careful what you ask for...

Apparently I can make requests at Masters that actually get heard.  Who knew???  This morning I asked Coach Frank if we could (sometime in the distant future) do 10*200 meters all on the same interval. He looked at me and said:  Sure. How about today !  Gulp!  Hold on. Wait a second. I didn't mean today! I am not even ready...  Too late. 10*200 it is.  Of course I didn't tell anybody that this was my idea for fear of getting drowned... Not that 10*200 is terribly hard and it's certainly not very far but 200s have never been my favorite. (Which is exactly why I asked for them.) It's kinda like running the 800: longer than a sprint but still fast .  I managed to escape into the next lane over after the warm-up. Lots of fast people showed up today and I got a little worried, so I joined P and T who I love for their consistency. I'll take consistency over speed any day. They made me lead our lane and, altho...

IM AZ - Spectating Extravaganza

professional spectator at work I have been waiting for this weekend all year long! I like to race but there is nothing like spending a weekend spectating and cheering with friends for friends. Love it! Especially considering our awesome set-up. I got spoiled and enjoyed every minute of it!  Highlights of Super Saturday :  Hanging out with Karen all weekend. Love that girl! On Friday night I was in my usual I-hate-to-pack-and-leave-my-routine-and-would-rather-back-out-of-this-trip mood. But knowing that Karen would pick me up early the next morning ready to party, got me off the couch and filling my bags. By 8am Max had already been throwing about 24 tantrums that day, so you can imagine my relief that I didn't, indeed, change my mind. See ya, Karl! I am outta here!  Swim session with Coach Heath . In a lovely outdoor saltwater pool. Heaven! Now I just need to figure out how to convince Heath to (at least temporarily) move to Flagstaff. Then there mig...
