Playtime's not over yet...


You did not think I was done, did you? Saturday definitely was not over yet.

I love Sand Hollow. It reminds me of Lake Powell.

After our run we decided it was time for a little experiment. We drove out to Sand Hollow Reservoir to see what the water would be like. Both of us love open water swimming and, as you can see, it is absolutely beautiful. When we heard that the water was a lovely 50 degrees, we knew we needed to be prepared. This is the result of our 20-minute neoprene party:

I know. We are the biggest nerds.

Not much showing except hands, feet*, and face. Well, our experiment turned into a full body ice bath and lasted a whooping 10 minutes! We barely made it to the first buoy. We were about to give up when we discovered that we could keep our face from completely freezing by throwing in some backstroke. Having our face warmed up by the sun for a few seconds, allowed us to put it back in the water for a few more strokes.

I think we managed to swim about 100 yards. Pathetic. But fun. I can honestly say that I have never felt this invigorated coming out of the water. That feeling, however, only lasted a few seconds and then heavy shivering set in. Thank you, Subaru, for your lovely seat heaters.

After a nice afternoon break we swung our tired bodies back on the bike for some more fun. There was no way we were going to miss out on biking in Snow Canyon. This is why:

How could you not want to bike through this beauty? We did one loop together and then Leslie headed back for a massage.

I felt tired but since there was still plenty of daylight, I did not need to make dinner, and no one was desperate for me to come home, I could not get myself to stop and did another loop. So glad I did!

* Actually, I was wearing neoprene booties as well but, in case anyone cares, I do not recommend them. I could not keep the water out, which resulted in a lot of drag and still freezing feet.

I can't believe you attempted to swim in 50 degree water oh man thats COLD. That is a beautiful picture you took of the lake. Glad you had fun training. Maybe one day i will feel like exercising that much but probably not.

Feat of Fortitude - Half Triathlon

The alarm went off way too soon on Sunday morning. 4 am? Really? Well, it was time to move my butt out of bed for Feat of Fortitude Part II: the Mountain Man Half Triathlon . Why did I choose to run a Half Marathon one day and do a Half Triathlon the next? Because the prize for the fastest combined time of these events was free entries to both events next year! Considering our financial situation, I had to give it a shot. I knew I was not going to have enough time on race morning but I just could not handle the thought of waking up at 3:30 am. And I paid for it. I forgot to tape a couple of GUs onto my bike. Lesson #1 : No matter how early the race starts, I need to be there at least 2 hours early . Most people don't need that much time but I do. I always have. I like to get a good spot, set everything up perfectly, take my bike for a little spin (when allowed), run, stretch, chat, etc. Those might be my favorite 2 hours of race day! The swim was great! I was loving it...

NO Race Report: IRONMAN LAKE TAHOE 2014

This is how gorgeous it COULD have been...  I wake up at 3:30 and I smell smoke .  Inside the house through closed windows.  CRAP!  No need to even take a peek through the blinds.  I knew there was a good chance this would happen after seeing the smoke roll back in the night before but I was hoping for the best... only to wake up to the worst.  Thursday , when we rolled into town, the air was terrible.  Like the-minute-I-got-out-of-my-car-I-got-a-headache terrible. But there was hope because, hey, winds change and firefighters are hard at work and there were more than two days left before the race!  This is what Thursday evening looked like down by the lake:  I didn't do much that night. Just a a very easy little jog along the beach to shake out the legs after a day of driving. And super short swim because I couldn't wait any longer to swim in that beautiful lake !!! But then, of course, I got wimpy again...
