StrollerStrides

Usually, while Noah is having a great time at preschool, Max and I go running.

When Noah was little, I took him on runs in the stroller all the time. Before moving to Flagstaff, Max had hardly ever had that pleasure for different reasons:

a) who wants to push a double jogger with 2 kids in it while running? Right now my kids weigh 29 and 41 lbs. The chariot itself is at least 30 lbs. 100 extra lbs? No thanks. Unless that is my only option...

b) I hate sitting around doing nothing. I assume my kids do, too. So I try to spare them.

c) I was (usually) always free to run by myself in Provo. Good friends, grandparents, neighbors, cousins. Most of the time, I had someone to play with my kids.

Well, things change.

Now I am "stuck" here in Flagstaff. All by my little self.

So with Noah in preschool 3 mornings a week, it was time to get out the single Chariot. I've always loved our Cougar CX. I can't seem to find any pictures of ours, unfortunately.

It is pretty much a racing machine, I tell ya! Ok. Not quite. But almost. You can have attachments for strolling, hiking, running, biking and even skiing! Believe me, we have all of them and love them! Can you believe that Karl wanted to sell this beauty and have me be stuck with the double? No way, I said. And I am glad I did.

Well, I digress. This is not supposed to be an advertisement for Chariot. Although it might as well be.

This week I decided to try out StrollerStrides which is a fitness/running group here in town for moms and their kids (in strollers). I found what was to be expected: a bunch of (super nice) moms, their kids, and strollers.

I also found the McMillan Elite Running Team. It so happens that this post-collegiate team happens to train (for the Olympics) in the same place at the same time as StrollerStrides. No question about what group I wanted to belong to! But since I don't have a runner's figure or speed and because they did not welcome strollers, I decided to side with the other moms.

So while the real runners were doing some kind of hard core interval training, we were either jogging in place or doing some sort of core exercises while singing "Twinkle, twinkle little star" to our kids. I have to admit, I was a little embarrassed.

But since StrollerStrides is sponsored by LUNA (which is owned by CliffBar), there were two big boxes full of energy bars for us to load up on. Also, they had little leg warmers in fun Halloween print and I ended up walking away with 5 pair! That part was awesome!

Actually, I would definitely go again but, unfortunately, it is not free. So I will just continue to run from playground to playground with my little running buddy. Not quite at the speed of a Strider but definitely not at the speed of a Runner either.

Haha, this post made me think about that first time we went running together with our oldest boys in strollers. Good times! Hope you find some good training partners there that have little kids too to trade off with! :)

I love to read about moms trying Stroller Strides for the first time!

Sounds like you had a great time and that you would do it again... perhaps a class pass rather than monthly membership would be in order :) You could then limit yourself to go to Stroller Strides once a week or something, so you still get the benefits you outlined while keeping tabs on your pocket book.

Hee, hee. There's a Stroller Strides opening up here ... A little exercise with other moms and their babies sounds nice. I'm poking around your website trying find the exercise video you and Jenn were working out to in Las Vegas, but I'm going to give up and just write you about that :-)

Camping Trip - Big Sur - CA

Andrew Molera State Park - our paradise for a week After it became clear that we would most likely be in Utah all summer, I got a bit antsy and really wanted to go on a family vacation. We went camping in Moab in March and it was great fun. Since I am not training or racing, we might as well go on a road trip to California and camp by the beach for a while! Easier said than done because, of course, we were way too late to get any decent spot anywhere along the coast. Everything bookable was booked. We did a bunch of research and found a little campground in Andrew Molera State Park  that fit our (very small) budget and was first-come first-served. Perfect! So we mapped out a plan, loaded up the car, and took off for 10 days!  Not exactly traveling lightly. That road bike (mine) was solely for commuting purposes.  Traveling from Provo up to Salt Lake City and then west on I-80, our first stop was Donner Lake up by Lake Tahoe/Truckee. I love Lake Tah...

I am so lucky

I feel the need to write. My thoughts are all jumbled. Can I make sense of them on paper? Writin g gives me perspective and makes it easier to let go. Last weekend I was very frustrated, mad, self-centered, unhappy , wallowing in self-pity. This weekend I was more balanced, a little more patient, trying to be less selfish, happy . How did it happen? I have had to deal with myself for almost 30 years now and, luckily, have figured out a few things on the way. Like how to feel at peace with myself , my family , my life . It shouldn't be complicated to be happy in my circumstances. I realize that. But sometimes it still is. Sometimes being a mom and wife doesn't come easy to me. Sometimes I think everyone would be better off if I wasn't a mom and wife. Sometimes I wish it was easier to just take off and do nothing but swimbikeruneatsleep for a week or two. It's not helping that my German teammates are doing just that. Right now. On a beautiful island. In the warm...

Swimming in Germany - Lakes Galore

Baggersee Weingarten Let's see.... I've been in Germany now for 4 weeks and have had the privilege to swim in 5 different lakes. Let me count how many times I have swum in a lake in Arizona since moving there 2 years ago... That would be 1 time in Lake Mary during the MountainMan. And I am not planning on swimming in it again until this year's MountainMan. As you might have already guessed:  I am in heaven !  Baggersee Weingarten So are the kids. Appropriately dressed in German swim wear.  That's my mom next to me in the picture above. You see where I get it... Growing up we would either go on a hike or bike ride every weekend and take a dip in various lakes along the way. Good memories!  My niece Lynn at Bad Waldsee This lake was especially fun. It was basically at the center of a beautiful old little town. I saw people walk out their front door and go for a little swim. No motorized anything allowed as on most lakes here. Pl...
