Daybreak Triathlon

I loved racing the Daybreak Triathlon. Huge thanks to US Trisports for a great race!

I was able to pull off a great swim and come out of the water in first place. The bike ride was super fun and I made it back without getting caught. I really enjoyed the 2-loop run around the lake with lots of company from other athletes. Fortunately, I never had to see what's left in the tank since no one ran me down.

Here are the stats:

1st Female
13th Overall

Swim 17:58
T1 1:27
Bike 59:33 (21.3)
T2 1:06
Run 46:33 (7:31)
Time 2:06:36

We are pretty sure that is me in this picture...

Lowlights of the race
  • standing in the water for about 30 min until the start of our wave
  • still missing the start. Was there even a gun shot? Cause I never heard one.
  • a motor boat crossing right in front of me. Breathing/tasting gas while swimming is never fun, especially not in a race.
  • finding my carefully set up transition area all messed up!
  • forgetting my sunglasses because of I could not see them in the mess!
  • no room for my bike on the rack. Seriously guys...
  • having numb feet. I had hard time getting them into my running shoes because I could not feel them at all. It took about 2 miles for them to warm up.
  • being passed by BJ on the run. I don't think I've ever felt so small, fat, and slow in a race!

Highlights of the race
  • having so many great triathletes and friends all at the same race
  • chatting with Erin and Ammie for about 30 min while waiting in the water
  • the expected uncontrollable shivers never set in on the bike
  • feeling pretty strong on the bike despite the very hilly course
  • seeing how fast BJ and Jason were flying on the run
  • not wishing that I was doing the sprint instead!
  • crossing the finish line and drinking about half a gallon of chocolate milk

I really don't mind (most of) the things I labeled as 'lowlights'. They are part of the race experience and keep things interesting.

Congratulations to Leslie and BJ on their amazing wins! And to Jameson, David, Ian, Jason, Erin, Ammie (and everyone else) on a fantastic race!

PS:
Karl, could you please come to my next race and take some decent pictures of me? Maybe some where I am not wearing a wetsuit??? Oh wait, you will miss that one, too. Jen, can you help me out?
In a desperate attempt to put pictures with this post, I "borrowed" these from The Triathlete's Edge. Thanks!

Love Karls comment! I was just reading through all your posts and am officially terrified to do this triathlon this summer. Scary!

New PR at a High Cost

St. George Halfmarathon Report I have a feeling that this is going to be long . Even though I am going to tell you about the rest of the weekend in my next post. So. Sit back and enjoy, if you are interested. A few days before the race, I told Karl that I have two options : 1. Run the way I usually race. Conservative . Start out at a decent pace, log negative splits, finish feeling strong and in control. 2. Start out faster than usual, hang onto that pace for as long as possible, die a slow and painful death. Karl just laughed . He knew how unlikely it was that I would choose the second option. But, to be honest, the idea kinda grew on me. It was a running event, after all. No pressure. Simply a way of testing where my fitness is at. On my way to St. George, I called Coach M . She told me I was going to choose the second option. Oh, how I love to have coaches! No need to try to figure things out in my own little head. I just ask and do as I am told. There was ju...

I am so lucky

I feel the need to write. My thoughts are all jumbled. Can I make sense of them on paper? Writin g gives me perspective and makes it easier to let go. Last weekend I was very frustrated, mad, self-centered, unhappy , wallowing in self-pity. This weekend I was more balanced, a little more patient, trying to be less selfish, happy . How did it happen? I have had to deal with myself for almost 30 years now and, luckily, have figured out a few things on the way. Like how to feel at peace with myself , my family , my life . It shouldn't be complicated to be happy in my circumstances. I realize that. But sometimes it still is. Sometimes being a mom and wife doesn't come easy to me. Sometimes I think everyone would be better off if I wasn't a mom and wife. Sometimes I wish it was easier to just take off and do nothing but swimbikeruneatsleep for a week or two. It's not helping that my German teammates are doing just that. Right now. On a beautiful island. In the warm...

RAGE Race Report

Alright . Here it is. First triathlon race report of the season. Wow. Did you know that I love racing triathlons? Truth is: I used to not like it very much. Now I do! Racing breaks up the monotony of training and I am enjoying tapering and recovering more these days. I must be getting old... I was still not feeling well on Friday but (like I said in the last post) I was really looking forward to getting away for 24 hours - racing or no racing. The 3.5 hour drive went by super quick thanks to my friend Karen who happens to be awesome. We had lots to chat about and I got a much-needed dose of adult conversation. Packet pick-up was rather uneventful . Except for a big 31 on my left calf. I am getting old... No long-lost friends to catch up with and not many Utah peeps. Instead, I found plenty of questions to ask the race director and visited the PowerTri booth. Coach and I talked about switching to the Olympic distance race but I decided no to. It is pretty crazy what a big drop in ...
